I am finding it difficult to write about this week’s Throwback Thursday film. Mostly because I have the DVD on and am quite distracted reciting it line for line to concentrate on actually typing. Obviously, this is one of my favorite movies of all time. And, may you never know the utter feeling of disappointment of discovering first-hand that there is no basement at the Alamo. Without further hesitation, I present to you Pee Wee’s Big Adventure!

My older brother Dennis, may he rest in peace, went through a phase in the 80s where he would shift in and out of different personas, namely that of Paul Reuben’s famous man-child, Pee Wee Herman. It was both joyous and difficult to live in a house with someone who answered your every comment the way Pee Wee would (“I know you are but what am I?“) This movie was watched so much, as I mentioned, I can basically recite it. And it never stops being funny.
Pee Wee’s Big Adventure is a re-telling of the classic story The Bicycle Thief. It tells the story of a boy whose beloved bike is stolen, and his cross-country quest to get it back. This was Tim Burton’s first time directing a feature film, and marked the first collaboration between him and Oingo Boingo front man, Danny Elfman. The film was co-written by Paul Reubens and SNL alum, Phil Hartman. It featured a slew of memorable cameos from James Brolin, Morgan Fairchild, Cassandra Peterson (Elvira), and Jan Hooks. The film co-starred the uber-talented Elizabeth (E. G.) Daily.
Pee Wee’s Big Adventure manages to find a balance between total randomness and scenes that actually carry a plausible plot forward. And, if you’ve seen it once, you’ll never forget it. Thirty years later, and I still quote this movie on the daily! The film has evolved into a true cult classic and embodies all that could be pure and fun growing up in the 80s.
If you’ve never seen it (what planet are you from?) or if it’s been more than a few months since you’ve seen it, I suggest you stop what you’re doing and watch Pee Wee’s Big Adventure! If you don’t have it on hand, go buy it. And don’t forget…”Tell’em Large Marge sent ya!”
Stay tuned next week when we take a look at Weird Science!
