If you’re anything like me, one bite of a jalapeno pepper is enough to set off your inner fire alarm. I am a spicy food wuss. I’ll always choose mild salsa, and sweet bell peppers are about as “pepper” as I’m going to get.
Did you know that on the Scoville scale (what they use to measure units of heat) a jalapeno comes in at around 5,000-6,000. Since 2007, the Ghost Pepper of India had been considered the world’s hottest pepper. In early 2012, the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion pepper stole the title. But in December 2013, the Guinness Book of World Records crowned a new pepper as the world’s hottest. May I present, Smokin’ Ed’s Carolina Reaper!
Ed Currie, owner of the PuckerButt Pepper Company, has spent years cultivating this fiery champion.
Remember what I said about jalapenos? The Carolina Reaper has registered around 2 million on the Scoville Scale. Yes, you read that right. We’re talking millions. I’ve heard stories of people vomiting almost immediately after trying to eat something half as hot. And rumor has it, the effects of the Carolina Reaper last upwards of 20 minutes. I cannot imagine not being able to ease the burn of something spicy on my tongue and in my throat for 3 minutes let alone 20. Ed has been all over the news since Guinness presented his award. You can read a great article about him and his pepper by clicking here.
I’m also happy to brag that these peppers came into existence right here in Rock Hill, SC. The heat of the Carolina Reaper was tested and verified by Winthrop University. Naturally, it isn’t enough for me to just talk about the Carolina Reaper, especially given that the media has been all over this pepper for weeks now. I feel the need to take it to the next level.
No! I’m not going to eat one! Are you nuts? I am going to do the next best thing….get Justin Lochel to eat one. And get it on video! Justin added one dropper-full of Essence of Reaper, the equivalent of 40 Carolina Reapers in liquid form, to his pepper before eating it. He chose an extra spiny Reaper, stating that the bumpier they are, the hotter the taste. I filmed him for 5 minutes. After I turned the camera off, things got worse. It was torture to watch, but Justin kept the pepper down! Really, with the added Essence, he was eating around 4 million on the Scale. Ouch. What a trooper. Ed told me afterwards, “99 out of 100 people would have gotten sick doing what he just did.” Way to go, Lochel. And, thanks again!
