Have you ever felt like you were meant for greater things? Do you sometimes wish that you were doing something different with your life? Of course you answered yes to both questions. There have been countless times throughout my life where I pondered the what-ifs. I’m finally at a point in my life where I can look back and say with a degree of honesty that I wasn’t necessarily unhappy with what was happening in my life during those times. Hindsight tells me that I was merely disappointed in myself. Everyone has to play the cards they are dealt. But it’s up to you to decide what game you are playing.
Even in the worst of times, we have managed to muddle through and we always come back stronger than before. I would feel a sense of helplessness, though. I knew what I was capable of, but I couldn’t always push myself to full potential. I was–and am–the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion all rolled into one. My brains, heart, and courage were there all the time…I just had to believe in myself.
And so, we live and we learn–hopefully we learn a lot. We gain new skills and we hone old ones. Constantly moving forward and changing, adapting to the world around us. Sometimes we are able garner happiness from the chaos. Other times…we are not.
It is in those times that we have to be brave enough to believe in ourselves. What is stopping you? Honestly? Is there something that you’ve always wanted to try? Is your current station not where you expected to be at this stage in your life? Why not make a change? It can be as simple as a new hobby or learning a skill, to a life-altering career change. You CAN do it.
In the past few years, I have known people that took great leaps of faith in order to change the path that they were on. One, struggling to make it big in a chosen career field, decided to try teaching those skills from home. In doing so, this person discovered even greater strengths and talents and has affected so many lives. Two others, each respectively, chose to pack up and move to entirely new towns in order to expand their careers, creating new paths. New opportunities await you every single day, though you should never be afraid to create them for yourself.
I know that creating a “new life” for yourself is easier said than done, and so I want you to know that I intend to practice what I preach. Recently, things in our household…changed. In the past, when faced with situations such as this, we did what was expected of us and started back at the bottom of the same or similar totem pole. This time, however, we have decided to things our way. We are carving out our own totem pole. Yes, we’ll still start at the bottom, and it will not be easy. But nothing that’s worth it ever is. We have decided to take our collective experiences, knowledge, and skill sets, and combine them to create something new. It will be our own. If we fail, we’ll have no one to blame but ourselves. But if we succeed, we’ll have found the next step towards what we were always meant to do.
So, I ask you…Who are you? What are you meant to be doing? When will you make a change? How will you make yourself happy? Just put one foot in front of the other….
