This week’s Thespian Thursday tells the tale of…wait. That’s a lot of Ts.
Let me try this again.
Want to see something really funny? My Thespian Thursday highlight is for Over The Counter Improv! I have seen this talented comedy troupe perform live numerous times and they are constantly improving. I was first introduced to them back in late 2010, by my good friend, Dustin Riccardo. Dustin and I had just finished working on the Rocky Horror Show and he invited me and some other friends to come and see his Improv group perform. They were hilarious! We recognized a few of the cast members from Friday night karaoke, and I’m happy to say that I can count them among my friends still.
If you’ve ever seen the TV show Whose Line Is It, Anyway? then you’ll understand the premise of the evening. Hosted by OTC founder, Paul Marks, the cast (including my personal favorites Cindy Curtis, Matt Curtis, Kristin Jann-Fischer, Phillip Lewis, and Joel Burns, along with Dustin) plays out various comedic scenarios with the action and dialogue being made up on the spot. Paul takes suggestions from the audience, so the cast must collaboratively create the scenes as they are happening live and unscripted. The cast never knows what they are going to get, and you never know just how far they’ll take the jokes for a good laugh!
OTC offers corporate team building exercises and improv classes. It’s a fast paced form of acting that challenges you to think on your feet and push yourself beyond the limits, boosting your self confidence. If you ever have the opportunity to participate, I highly recommend it!
And, if you are free this Saturday evening, March 23, 2013, you need to head out to the Actor’s Theatre of Charlotte. OTC will be performing at 8pm. Tickets are just $12 at the door (and their last few shows have sold out, so you might even want to visit their website and secure your tickets in advance! Look for their link in the sidebar!)
Improv is not as easy at it looks…and these guys make it look real good. So, so funny! Be sure to check them out!
